On January 12, 2010 a massive earthquake laid waste to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, killing hundreds of thousands of people. Within three days, Dr. Paul Farmer arrived in the Haitian capital, along with a team of volunteers, to lend his services to the injured.

Join Dr. Jonathan LaPook, medical correspondent for the "CBS Evening News," as he interviews Dr. Farmer about the book and his work in Haiti and across the globe.
 


Paul FarmerPaul Farmer, M.D., Ph.D., is Kolokotrones University Professor at Harvard University and Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is Chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and co-founder of Partners In Health. He also serves as UN Deputy Special Envoy for Haiti, under Special Envoy Bill Clinton. Dr. Farmer and his colleagues have pioneered novel, community-based treatment strategies that demonstrate the delivery of high-quality health care in resource-poor settings. He has written extensively on health, human rights, and the consequences of social inequality. He is also a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

 

Jonathan LaPookJonathan LaPook, M.D. is a board-certified and practicing physician in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He has been an associate attending physician for New York-Presbyterian Hospital since 2001, and before that served as an assistant attending physician and an assistant physician for the hospital. Dr. LaPook has also been an associate clinical professor of medicine at Columbia University Medical Center since 2001, and was formerly an assistant professor of clinical medicine and an instructor in clinical medicine at the university.
